WhentheBBCaskedifIwasinterestedinmakingafilm,Ijumpedatthechance.Ihavetendedtodealwithmyfamilybymakingthemintolittleartprojects.Imadeanalbumin1998calledElectro-shockBluesthatdealtextensivelywithmysister'sandmother'sdeaths.Whilemysister'ssuicidenotedidindeedcontainapassageaboutgoingofftomeetourfatherinaparalleluniverse,Ihadn'tmadeanythingthatdealtwithmyfatherthewayIhaddealtwiththerestofmyfamily,andthiswasthewayIlikedtodoit:makesomethingthatistherapeuticformepersonallythat,hopefully,canoffersomethingfortherestoftheworld.

ThefirstfewdaysofshootingwereawkwardandIfeltprettyuptight.ThenonedaywhileIwasbeinginterviewedoncameraaboutsomepainfulexperience,IheardLouise[Lockwood],thedirector,softlyclickhermouthandwhisper,"Aw,E..."SuddenlyIthought:"Thesepeopleactuallycareaboutme."IthenrelaxedandprobablystartedsayingallsortsofthingsIwouldhavebeentooguardedaboutbefore.
Iwasstruckbywhatatragedymyfather'slifewas.Hehascontributedsomethinghugetotheworld,butforhimitwaspainful.Howwouldyouliketocomeupwithsomethingsomind-blowingabouthowtheworldworks,confidentthatyouknewitwastrue,buthavenoonesupportyourview?Itmusthavebeentheloneliestlife,beingthesmartestguyintheroom,justhavingtoshutupandkeepyourthoughtstoyourselfwhiletheregularchimpsallchataway.Iwasdeterminedtohelptogivehimthedayinthesunhenevergotwhenhewasalive.
IspentaweekatPrincetonlearningaboutphysicsandhangingoutwithmyfather'soldfriends.Ididnotinheritmyfather'sgiftformathematics,andcanbarelycalculatethetipafterdinner,soitwasarealchallengeformetobestandinginfrontofblackboardslearningaboutquantumphysics.ButIcametohaveaprettygoodunderstandingofmyfather'stheory.InVirginiaImetsomeofmyfather'scoworkersandevenwentinsidethePentagon(whoknewsecuritywassolax?).
